Archive for ‘Sai’s Blog’
Welcome all to the new Sai’s Asylum! The site has been restructured and reborn with the focal point now being my new webcomic! Because of this the site is going to have even sharper laser-like focus, so no more random game reviews. That doesn’t, however, mean I won’t babble about games from time to time in my blog down here, it’ll just be less official.
As for the tutorials and such, I’ll be restoring them at a later time in their own section, and possibly making some more. I’m also going to be drawing my comic and despite having about a 20 page buffer I still want to keep up and give myself lots of wiggle room, so stuff like that won’t appear on a regular basis. I may however start doing the speed-drawing videos again on YouTube.
You may have also noticed I’ve added ReCaptcha to the comments. I know these kinds of things can be a little annoying but it was sadly necessary as when I pretty much abandoned the old site to work on Tides of Tirnanog it got spammed to hell and back. Because I like to leave comments open without registration I needed some extra spam protection. However! ReCaptcha is a good cause, using bot blocking as a way to improve software that transcribes scanned books into digital copies. So just remember when you have to keep reloading it until you can find a phrase you can actually confidently enter that you’re advancing technology! …That’s the ticket!
I just updated the Characters page since we have a new character introduced now! The information in her bio isn’t really spoilers since it’s nothing you won’t learn on the next few pages.
Fun fact: The picture used for her bio is from the upcoming issue 2.
My friend Mayshing has been running a fundraiser for a full color volume of her long, long on-going webcomic E-Depth Angel. There’s only a few days left in the fundraising so you might want to check it out: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1207413692/e-depth-angel-volume-1-color-comic
As part of my keeping you all entertained during the two week dry spell, I thought I’d write a quick article about my fantasy influences. Since I’m writing a comic about elves in a vaguely medieval setting it’s probably clear that I’m a gigantic fantasy nerd (as scarce as good books and movies in the genre are.) Here are some favorites of mine from my childhood that have probably contributed to shaping my view of fantasy worlds and writing, or at the very least have contributed to my love of fantasy as a genre.
Like some of the craziest writers out there, I sometimes pretend that I’m one of my characters. Unlike the crazy authors of yore I act it out in a healthy way through video games! For those who couldn’t guess by seeing my Live and Steam gamertags in my sidebar, I am an avid gamer. I consider it to be my biggest hobby (I consider art more than a hobby), and I’ve been into video games since I was about 7 (that would be ’89, kids.)
Despite my old school status it’s only in recent years that I’ve taken PC gaming seriously. And with PC gaming comes mods. And with mods comes obsessively recreating your own characters in the games you play. ….Or is that just me?
Witness now the Teriths I’ve made in two of the biggest fantasy games I regularly indulge in.
The Reason Why It’s Elves and Not Angels
by Sai on February 16, 2011 at 11:32 AMI realize that after years of me drawing one set of characters on deviantART, Tides sort of comes out of left field for alot of long time followers of my stuff. Why the hell did I spend so much time developing the angel cast of characters and then suddenly come out with a fantasy comic about elves?
Well, sit down kids and I’ll spin you a yarn. It’s all about the creative process and how sometimes even that is completely out of your control… ↓ Read the rest of this entry…
This is the first time I’ve ever attempted to record myself penciling. It came out a bit warped since my art desk is on a pretty sharp angle and I was having a hard time positioning my webcam. I’m probably gonna do more of these (especially if I might possibly go on a very short hiatus again) so tell me if you like it or not.
And you can tell I bite my nails. I was being good, you know, then a few intense games of Civ 5 did me in.
EDIT: Now extended to the 21st due to a broken wacom pen. Uuuugghhh!
Sorry about that folks, I really hate doing this sort of thing. It started when I lost all of page 12 to some weird glitch in Manga Studio when it decided a certain layer had way more information on it than it actually did. I was working around it for a while (with the program telling me it didn’t have enough ram to even select and delete areas of the layer) but after accidentally merging another layer with that one the program crashed. And then crashed any time I tried to open that particular page again.
So I had to start over. On the plus side the page’s layout is better this time around. But I still need to re-do the inks, backgrounds, tones etc. Arrrgh.
So since I’ve been struggling to keep up anyway I’m taking this opportunity to catch up on pages, also to give myself some time to work on art that isn’t comic pages because I really really need to before I go crazy. So you’ll be seeing some character art soon enough. I need to work on the cover for Issue 2′s print version as well.
Like before I’ll still be making posts during the hiatus, just random stuff about the comic or history of the comic, speed drawing videos and anything else people may be interested in!
Just a fun illustration because I was dying to do something in color. I’ll probably use the basic image on print versions of the comic. I think this sums up Kittika and Terith’s character dynamic nicely.
Okay, I realized I needed another hiatus post. Sorry! I’ve been working, and drawing, and… and playing Dragon Age 2. Elves look weird in that game. And speaking of weird looking elves, here’s some of my old Tides artwork! Hopefully it’ll make some of you younger artists out there feel better about yourself while it thoroughly embarrasses me! These are all from the early 2000′s.
